This German and Austrian take on mulled wine is incredibly easy to make and is sure to warm you up in a hurry. If you love a stronger citrus flavour, feel free to include a couple of slices of zest in the pot as well. Serves 4 to 6 guests.
In a pan, gently heat 1 litre red wine, 75 g sugar, 1 teaspoon cloves, 1 cinnamon stick and the juice of both an orange and a lemon. Cook until almost at a boil. Strain the mix into a large bowl and serve warm.
HOT CHOCOLATE MARTINI
There's no denying hot chocolate is one of winter's greatest indulgences, but why not take it one step further and turn it into a cocktail. Easy to make, and the perfect end to a winter's meal, this cocktail is perfect for sipping away the cold weather blues. Serves one guest.
Start by making your favourite hot chocolate and placing it in the fridge to chill. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add 100 mL chilled hot chocolate, 30 mL crème de cacao, 30 mL Bailey's Irish cream and 20 mL vanilla vodka. Shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Add a few mini marshmallows to decorate and serve.
The fruity flavour of dry cider is the perfect companion for wintery spices such as cloves, cinnamon and allspice. Serves 6 guests.
In a pan, gently heat 1 litre dry cider, 40 g brown sugar, 4 cloves, 4 allspice berries, 2 cinnamon sticks and 6 tablespoons dark rum. Stir until the mix is hot and the sugar is completely dissolved. Pour into glasses and serve hot.
