THE PERFORMANCE FOUNDATION: COVER STORY
The best new base in the extreme-wear game? This satiny-feel, full coverage absorbs shiny oil puddles, yet infuses skin with moisture and goes 24 hours without needing a touch-up. Full throttle, but still looks like fresh, real face. Essential.
Our picks: YSL All Hours Encre de Peau Foundation, $89, from Myer
THE LASH: ACCESSOR-EYES
Tricked-up eyes stole the show this season and Emilio Pucci’s drama mascara is the most doable take. Just plug the wand deep into the lash bed and glide skyward for intense definition or, after black mascara, graze along tips with the brush to dazzle in the light when you wink.
HACK SEEN BACKSTAGE: Dip a superfine brush into mascara tubes to rework the pigment as eyeliner.
Our picks: Estée Lauder Pure Colour Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara in Black, $50, Waterproof Multi Effects Mascara in Black, $50, limited-edition Multi Effects Mascara in Purple, Green and Blue, $50 each, and Crystal Lash Topcoat, $45, from David Jones and Myer
THE DOUBLE DETOX
Black charcoal is a weapon for purging congestion, shrinking pores and zapping spots, while pro O2 facials plump cells up with energy. This two-part rapid peel fuses both and the radiance is off the Richter.
Our pick: Philosophy The Microdelivery Detoxifying Oxygen Peel, $85, from David Jones
OIL IS THE NEW LIP BALM
Officially. And this juicy, rich health-cocktail of passion fruit, camellia and pracaxi oil for lips is addictive. Feels delicious. So nourishing we want to sip it. We won’t. But we want to.
Our pick: Napoleon Perdis Double Duty Infusion Lip Oil, $35, from David Jones and Myer
THE NAIL: BRIGHT HERE, BRIGHT NOW
Good things happen when we paint up some hot tips. Current It-colours sun-drenched coral, cocktail pink and sunset orange gave Jeremy Scott’s runway all the cheerful feels – and look how they play up our completely fake new tans.
Our pick: OPI California Dreaming Collection Nail Lacquers in Malibu Pier Pressure, Santa Monica Beach Peach, and Me, Myselfie & I, $19.95 each, from David Jones and Myer
THE LIGHT SWITCH
This clever thinking is why LA facialist Kate Somerville is on the A-list’s secret speed dial. Her new exfoliating moisturiser pairs resurfacing acids and enzymes with lashings of moisture – and the glow shows from day one.
Our pick: Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Glow, $95, from Mecca Cosmetica
EVERYBODY NEEDS A LITTLE THERAPY, OK?
We need hush. Chill. Or maybe some steam. We must marinate our entire selves in the sublime new aromatherapeutic shower gels and plush body lotions from Jurlique. Y’know – something focus-freshening, yet quiet to help take us from out of our mind to unwiiiiiind.
Our pick: Jurlique Restoring Lemon, Geranium & Clary Sage Shower Gel, $35, and Body Lotion, $49, from David Jones
THE LIP: COLOUR RUSH
Take a heavy hint from Prada, Jason Wu and H&M: fire-alarm red, blood wine, extreme pink and purple are very necessary right now. Make it loud. And for the love of all that is holy, make it matte. For extra fade-proof grip, push pigment into pre-moisturised lips with a brush, blotting down a first layer before loading on a second dose.
LIP TIP: Liquidised pigments saturate then lock down like ink. First, edge lips with liner or your pressed powder for a laser-sharp line.
Our pick: NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in Give it Up, $39, from Mecca Cosmetica
FOUND: PERFECT FACIAL POWDER
Literal facial powder. As in a skin-glorifying facial inside pressed-powder make-up. A shot of the Miracle Broth that made La Mer a legend + serum-style hydration + airy “light-mastery particles” that also control oil = blur-focused, radiant, happy face.
Our pick: La Mer Skincolour Powder, $175, from David Jones
HOW TO… DO DIOR HAIR
Beach waves got a softer, more romantic rework on the runways, and nowhere made it cooler than Dior, where master Guido Palau pulled off the look with just two Redken styling products. Want in? Divide hair into eight big sections, spray texturiser from root to tip, then twist and clip into random rolls with a tissue. Clamp each with a hot iron for a few seconds, let set for 20 minutes, then release the rolls. Brush lightly and mist with flexible hairspray. Beret optional.
Our pick: Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam, $34.95, from Price Attack
#BLONDELYF JUST GOT BETTER
Purple-tint shampoos are every good blonde’s secret for keeping colour fresh, clear and vibrant. Now there’s a magic violet blow-dry spray that tones out brass while insulating against heat styling, too. God must be a blonde. *Sound of choir of angels*
Our pick: Fudge Clean Blonde Violet Tri-Blo, $21.99, from Price Attack
THE RESCUE BALM
Dermalogica is our go-to for cleansing that blitzes gunk but does good, soft, brightening things for a face, too. Behold the ingenious, dreamy new balm that lifts off hardcore stuff such as lash glue, 24-hour lipstick and mascara, sunscreen, spilled bikini wax – even chewing gum in hair – and still makes skin feel amazing. Comes with exfoliating mitt, too.
Our pick: Dermalogica Precleanse Balm, $65, from David Jones
THE FLASH FIX
Spring giving your face the itches? The Lancôme brains trust has just rewired the mega-seller Advanced Génifique with antioxidants and probiotics to calm sensitive reactions to weather changes, stress, diet and hormones.
Our pick: Lancôme Advanced Génifique Sensitive, $109, from David Jones and Myer
See ya, sponge. We’re moving on to a new, bendy, quick-rinse silicone cushion that contours, presses, rolls and blends liquid and cream make-up without sucking up all our product. Minor life upgrade.
Our pick: ModelCo Makeup Jelly Blender, $10, from David Jones
THE DREAMIEST CREAM MASK
Honestly, this feels heavenly. A lush dose of nourishing sea buckthorn and antioxidant maqui berry gives the face a healthful hug, while an all-natural SyriCalm complex keeps sensitive types soft, plump and comfy.
Our pick: Trilogy Very Gentle Hydra-Mask, $37.95, from Myer
HOT ALERT! THE SHEET MASK TAN SO GOOD IT’S GOT A WAITLIST
The world’s first sheet infusion facial tan ignited global beauty blogs when it launched at London Fashion Week AW17, and now it’s here. Soaking skin with dewy hydration, then leaving bronze behind, “masking makes the colour incredibly natural and smooth so it lasts”, says St Tropez tanning expert Michael Brown. “Leave on for 5-15 minutes to customise depth. I massage excess into the hairline, ears and jawline and it’s completely seamless.”
Our picks: St Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Face Sheet Mask, $12.99
Self Tan Express Bronzing Mist (for body), $49.95, from David Jones and Myer
