Red lipstick, Valentine’s Day beauty Red can be a tough shade to wear with many women steering clear of bright red lipsticks. It’s not a colour we use every day, especially in the office which calls for more subtle shades of lip colour. We become so accustomed to our usual shades that the weekend red lippy becomes overwhelming. But there is good news. Studies from the University of Manchester suggest that lip size is insignificant when it comes to perception of attractiveness; pigment is what matters most. Scientists tracked the eye movements of 50 men and found that they spent 2.2 seconds on lipstick-free mouths, 6.7 seconds on pink lips, and 7.3 seconds looking at red lips. Because there are so many shades to choose from, we’ve raided the shelves of MAC at Myer and NARS Mecca Cosmetica to bring you 5 flattering favourites. Our fav lip colours from top to bottom: 1) MAC Ruby Woo. 2) MAC Russian Red. 3) NARS Mysterious Red. 4) NARS Heat Wave. 5) NARS Luxembourg 1) MAC Retro Matte Ruby Woo Lipstick $36- for the red lip novice, great everyday retro colour, matte formula stays put while still looking creamy and fresh. Beauty note: On a yellow undertone it pulls off as an orange toned-red but on others, if you have a more pink undertone, it pulls off as a more blue toned red. Highly recommended as your first MAC lipstick because it suits everyone. 2) MAC Matte Russian Red lipstick $36- a MAC best-seller launched in the 80s, deep matte with incredible staying power. Madonna wore this shade during her Blonde Ambition World Tour causing these lippies to fly off the shelves. Beauty note: Gorgeous on warm toned skins, perfect for night outs, Ruby Woo (above) may be better for daytime glamour because it’s brighter. Russian Red is darker and more blue-toned than Ruby Woo. 3) NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Mysterious Red $39- described as a ‘crimson red’, subtly warm-toned, medium-dark red, bold, bright, and very opaque. Lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. Beauty note: The consistency is just waxy enough that it glides across the lips without tugging or pulling while still delivering full color in a single stroke. Comes in a crayon form which allows for easy application. 4) NARS Semi Matte Lipstick in Heat Wave $40- bright orange-red hue with a modern semi-matte finish, really pops on dark skin, provides full-bodied, velvety colour. Beauty note: fairly light so if you want maximum impact we suggest getting the NARS Matte Lip Pencil underneath to give longer staying power. 5) NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Luxembourg $26 – deep vivid watermelon colour, brings warmth and radiance to golden skin tones, bright pinky-red with a satin finish, thin texture, opaque and lightweight on the lips. Beauty note: If you like your reds with a lot of pink, you’ll love this shade, because from afar, it looks pinker than it does red. So what are you waiting for ladies? Smack on that red lippy this Valentine’s Day and have him mesmerized by those luscious lips. Written by Sussan Nguyen, our Women's Fashion & Beauty Expert.
