Modern Romance

An aura of romance and past-century nostalgia lingered on the SS16 runways of Prada, Gucci and Miu Miu with designers working ruffles, transparent effects and fluid silhouettes into their collections. The ultra-romantic aesthetic is delicate, sweet and feminine thanks to feathers, ruffles, chiffon, florals, and peplums. French lace and sheer details allow outfits to be revealing without losing a charming modesty.

The look isn’t just reserved for girly girls; this season’s romantic mood captures a modern approach with moody iterations, simplified silhouettes and just a skosh of whimsy. While experimenting with this hyper-feminine aesthetic, moderation is key (unless of course, you want to look like a Victorian-era princess).

While we love a good ruffle, all over lace and crystal embellishments, these elements are stronger in smaller doses. Think ‘less is more’. For weekend dressing, contrast one feminine piece against something tailored- a floral camisole, tailored shorts, sharp blazer and a peep-toe heel. There’s also no need for excess accessories or intense makeup. Necklaces and earrings should be minimalistic, nails pretty and pale and makeup understated and neutral.

The new romantic proves more versatile than ever. Here’s how to pull off the modern romantic without looking like you walked out of a fairy tale.
